F. Sartorius was founded in 1870 by Florenz Sartorius in Göttingen, Germany. Their primary focus was on scientific and laboratory instruments, especially mechanical balances and mass standards. In 1906, they acquired August Becker, a manufacturer of surveying and geodetic instruments (including theodolites and levels) and continued production of some of these instrument lines under the Sartorius name. By the late 1950s or early 1960s, Sartorius appears to have completely exited the field of surveying instrument manufacturing, as their catalogs and corporate history focus exclusively on weighing, filtration, and later, biotech applications.
